In 1963, Ford has reached the new heights of innovation and developed a small block based V8 engine at its Windsor manufacturing facility. Ford named this engine 289 Windsor Small Block V8. It was the first 90-degree V8 engine of the world with 4737 cm3 displacement to the extended version of 5751 cm3. It was designed to be an all-purpose V8 for all kind of cars because Ford was then thinking to introduce the same engine to all its vehicles as they have done a few years ago with their Ecoboost engine family. With the small dimensions and relatively lightweight body, it was a decent power unit. The 289 engines were just impressive power units and offered to almost all cars manufactured by Ford e.g. Falcons, Galaxies, upscale 500 models and even to the Mustang models of that time from 1964. These legendary engines proved them as second to none power units in the world. In the case of Ford Mustang, this engine was a best combination of power and characters. It was titled as the engine born to be the muscle. This small 289 V8 engine was capable of generating more than 200 hp of power and it delivered all its power in the Mustang with single dual barrel carburettor. When Ford recognized the potential of this engine, Ford gave this engine an upgrade package and pushed it to generate 220 hp.

In the preceding years, Ford has introduced the Hipo version of this engine it was a high power version of the engine which was capable of generating 271bhp of power. In the Mustang GT models, this engine was giving lively performance and thanks to the most admired Carroll Shelby, the Ultimate 289 was introduced in 1965. Shelby introduced racing Mustang and was known as Shelby GT350. It was the birth of world’s first officially launched racing car. Under the bonnet of this monster car, there was a 289 V8 engine with all new settings from intakes to cylinders and pistons. This new engine was capable of delivering more than 300 horsepower from its 4.7 litre displacement.

Last 289 engine was introduced in the Mustang models in 1968 and then Ford replaced this power unit with the even modern engine. But over the years, Ford manufactured and sold millions of these engines and aftermarket components are still in the market for these engines.
